Goya show at Boston MFA

Postby mdmattin » Tue Jan 20, 2015 2:19 am

I went into Boston Friday to see the Goya show at the Museum of Fine Arts. It was very impressive, with many paintings and prints I hadn't seen before. It was somewhat crowded but not completely jammed, so I was able to linger in front of a few works and do some quick sketches. Here they are, with links to images of the originals below each sketch.

Standing before the painting it seemed to me that the near eye was larger than it would naturally appear. I wondered if he had done the head from a closer vantage point than the painting as a whole, thus exaggerating the perspective. Curiously, the linked reproduction doesn't look that way to me.

This one also seemed to have an exaggerated near eye.

Oh, man, Matthew, you've been busy. What a time that must
have been. Great to see your sketches and then the links.
Thanks,so much. We do learn such a lot by studying and
copying these old masters.
