Ludwig Bemelmans

Postby mdmattin » Mon Feb 02, 2015 6:00 am

Saw the Ludwig Bemelmans show at the Eric Carle Museum today. The show is in honor of the 75th birthday of his most well known and beloved creation, Madeline. They had a lot of the original artwork for those books and for his other lesser known work, all of it delightful. The paintings are very spontaneous and un-fussed over looking, very much like some urban sketching, but in the service of illustration. They had his paintbox and materials on display, and I sneaked a pic to share with you. He had several bamboo pens, which are good for a lively, spontaneous line.

Thanks, Matthew, for posting this. I still get a tickle out of
MADELINE. And I also get a tickle out of old paint boxes.
I envy your getting to see the Bemelmans show.
