I'm featured on Gurney Journey!

Postby mdmattin » Sat Jan 02, 2016 11:03 pm

My entry to James Gurney's Six Word Story Challenge was chosen to be among five spotlit on his blog, Gurney Journey
To see all of the entries go to the challenge Facebook page.
I was already happy just to participate in this - there were so many excellent ideas and sketches - but getting picked really made my new year!

Fantastic! Congratulations! I recognized your work immediately, and I have great admiration for James Gurney, since his book co-authored with Thomas Kinkade was the one that inspired me to make sketching a bigger part of my life many years ago.

Congratulations, Matthew. You outdid yourself; Gurney made the right choice. I liked your sketch so much, and it seemed so relevant, I shared it to my FB page at https://www.facebook.com/andre.jute.5 -- if you check it out, note the remark of Bill Marantz, himself an artist (he's an actor and writer).

Thanks, GS, Russ, and Andre. I am a great Gurney fan, and have the Gurney/Kinkaid Artist's Guide to Sketching which is indeed a wonderful resource. It would be great if they brought it back into print in an inexpensive edition.
Andre, thanks for reposting my sketch! Perhaps it will go viral - or at least spirochetal... it's true the grass and especially the bush are meant to be fairly rebarbative, likewise the spiky church spire.
For my prize I chose his latest video tutorial, Fantasy in the Wild, which is, well, fantastic. It describes a way of thinking about developing a work of art which rang very true to me in its purposeful extemporization, but so different from your typical art tutorial, which tends to be more of a recipe for making a preconceived product. I highly recommend it.
