NZ Sketcher Overseas - travel sketching

Postby TaranakiSketcher » Fri Aug 09, 2013 9:29 am

Couple of weeks in sunny, blue skied, calm California.
My 'year-later' second attempt at Pasadena City Hall - a cross between Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean styles.
A crop duster which took our glider up on the edge of the Mojave desert and the San Gabriels. We had some excellent thermals. Some old Chevy's at Ojai. A modern home on the edge of one of the Venice Canals. Ynez Valley Model T advertising a Vineyard. San Buenaventura Mission, and a view of the crisp, white, geometric Getty Center.

I love the variety of styles you achieve by variant colouring schemes. The austere Getty sketch with its two splashes of colour is instantly humanised, even given humour.

BTW, I accidentally opened the first page of your sketches and saw again the Flinders St station, a nostalgia trip as the years I spent in Melbourne are of fond memory.

Beautiful work as always, Scott. I love the way you can handle complex perspectives with lightness and whimsy, while maintaining accuracy. I especially admire the umbrellas in the Getty - they are not easy to draw in a convincing space.

:) Agree with Matthew and others - Scott you are just so good at handling complex scenes - and the complex automobiles - with so much accuracy and yet economy

Years and years of dedication can be seen in your work

I recognize Skippy; I barbecued him. And the Sydney Opera House, though as I came to work in Pitt St by speedboat from Vaucluse round the headland, and tied up under the opera house, my viewpoint was different: sorta like a football player being sacked by a scrum of nuns. The back of Flinders St Station is a novelty: I used to face the front of the station every morning as I walked to work in Melbourne, and never thought of the back. Amazed that it has a back. Makes me wonder about other stations that I never thought of; could be an interesting travelogue in that.

Love the curious koala for itself and as obviously a very quick but meaningful sketch.

NZ Sketcher Overseas - travel sketching

Postby TaranakiSketcher » Sun May 25, 2014 3:26 am

Thanks Andre, Matthew & Dainty,
Animals can be fun, (and a challenge if talking about squirrels and monkeys). Andre that sounds an exotic way to get to work.

A month's work in Italy and France meant I could get a little sketching in as well. Here's a couple of batches:

* Alle Grazir outside my Bergamo hotel. a kindly café owner unfolded a seat for me, so I didn't have to lean against the wall.
* Noisy May Day protests in Bergamo - loud hailers, hammer & sickles, placards etc
* Ever present Carabinieri keeping a watchful eye
* Porta San Alessandro, gate through the walled old town of Bergamo Alta
* Carabinieri in dress uniform, at a stall amongst the vintage car booths - part of a car rally
* Enthusiasts with Vintage Fiat 600
* Bergamo Alta old town seen in the distance from Bergamo Bassa
* Former library in Bergamo Old town, at the point the funicular emerges
* Ape 50cc - agricultural version made by Piaggio (of Vespa fame)

NZ Sketcher Overseas - travel sketching

Second batch - European sketchers

* UNESCO heritage villiaggio of Cresp d'Adda where in the early 1900s a far sighted industrialist built a cotton textile factory and grand homes for his workers including gardens, washhouse, church, free education, swimming pools, theatres etc. http://villaggiocrespi.it/
* The owners home.
* I teamed up with a Milano UrbanSketcher - Gabriele - and we had a fun time together - he took me to the lesser known Piazza Mercanti http://gabrielesketchbook.blogspot.co.nz/
* Scene near Brera
* Door panel from Brera district of Milano
* The LuBar saw me sketching and asked me to draw in their book - then kindly plied me with their delicious Sicilian food and drinks. These sorts of experiences make travel sketching special
* LuBar with sketch
* Castello Sforzesco - Milano
