Attitude. You get the italians just right.

Look at the woman pushing the buggy in the Bergamo Alto sketch, everyone: just a few lines, and bingo, there she is, complete with attitude.

Ditto the door demon or gargoyle or dionysian sinner gleefully on his way to hell. Attitude.

Scott - amazing as always! Treasures of memory showing - like Andre said - attitude of local people and I think we can add attitude of the place and even the vehicles!

Your transport machine sketches always amaze me!

NZ Sketcher Overseas - travel sketching

Postby TaranakiSketcher » Sat Aug 01, 2015 10:05 am

Thanks Tina, Andre, Rajesh & GS for the encouragement.

I was fortunate that the Singapore Urban Sketchers Symposium was in our neighbourhood, and four of us from NZ joined the 400 from 36 countries - countries including Bhutan and Luxembourg! At Portland they started 6 years ago with 70. Next year it is in Manchester. It is well worth it, and I think each sketcher should go at least once in their lifetime.

* Itching to draw, I leave New Plymouth in 3C on a clear day
* Coffee cart at Auckland domestic
* 'On loan from Middle Earth' a Weta workshops contribution towers over the International Airport
* Souvenirs at the airport
* The obligatory inside aircraft pic, when you have 10 hours to kill
* Chinese temple view from my hotel window
* Trishaw
* View of Raffles Hotel - I joined a professional looking group of easel sketchers from Surabaya

Nice collection, Scot, and a record of what must have been a fantastic experience. I'm especially impressed with the "obligatory" airliner interior and the market, where you rendered a panoramic view of a complex, populated scene. Also like the water taxi and the Raffles Hotel, with all of its filagree and shady verandas.
The linked article was interesting, but I couldn't get the videos to play.

Aww, Scot, I love little Faith in God. But I agree, he looks as if that is
all that keeps him going.
What a collection here--so much to see.
And your Moo cows-- I always love the way you place your colors.
And "drawing each other" knocks my socks off.
Luv those colorful Japanese temples.... And Russ, you probably ARE
in photos-- billions & trillions.

Well, I envy you guys the ability to sketch in public. I am still cowering
behind a big Texas cactus.

PS Andre, I went back to check out that woman who was pushing
the baby carriage, and I thank you for pointing her out because I
had missed her. Yes, she is great. And so, along with the
"Drawing Each Other" --which knocked my socks off-- I found
a glorious camel. There are just so many fine details that a re-check
really pays.

I have said it again. The colours of your sketches are fantastic. Soooo bright colours. Which brand is this purple and is so brilliant? All purples I find here are dull and muddy. This though looks super.. !!

Alitogata, I'm afraid I cheat. I use Tombows (dual tip fibre pens) and wash them - which is why they are so bright - plenty of purples to choose from

Thanks too Matthew, Annie & Andre.
Matthew, I believe the link is a time of day thing. Seems to work most times now. http://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore-news/s ... tual-state It was an enjoyable time and forced you to be prolific. The market was new for me, I was trying to apply some of the shared techniques - probably the one I was proudest of getting beyond a usual style. I hadn't done a 180 plane interior view before - worked better than anticipated.
Annie, time to come out from behind the cactus. People are not critical, just curious - don't concern yourself with what they think, they don't mind how good or bad it is. Just aim to try to improve from your last sketch. It is worth getting beyond that point.
Cheers S

NZ Sketcher Overseas - travel sketching

Postby TaranakiSketcher » Fri Oct 30, 2015 7:44 am

Thanks both. Yes the hat is a Henschel Hat Co, Aussie Breezer, very comfortable and lets the air through. I think I owe it to the hat why they called me out for the interview.

Just back from a wonderful spell in Israel & Jordan via California. I teamed up with the very friendly Israeli Urban Sketchers.

* Leaving home (see my smaller Tombow travel quiver)
* Over the Pacific
* Waiting at Hertz
* Jet Pack America
* Caltech Capitals
